CAN YOU COUNT?
A shy little 4-year-old came in to the dentist for his first cleaning and check-up. The hygienist tried to strike up a conversation but no response.
After the cleaning, the dentist was called in to do the final check. The dentist tried to strike up a conversation as well. "How old are you?" No response.
The dentist then asked, "Don't you know how old you are?" Immediately four tiny fingers went up.
"Oh," replied the dentist, "and do you know how old that is?" Four little fingers went up once again.
Continuing the effort to get a response, the dentist asked, "Can you talk?" The solemn little patient looked at him and asked, "Can you count?"
There are a number of passages of passages in the Bible which make reference to the importance of counting:
In Genesis 15:5, God said to Abraham, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.” And then He promised him, "So shall your descendants be.” That's a lot of descendants! Abraham, can you count?
In Psalm 139:17-18, David said, "How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand." How comforting to realize how much God thinks about us! Can you count?
In Luke 17:28, Jesus said, "For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it." How important it is to "count" the cost of commitment to Jesus Christ! Can you count?
In Philippians 3:7-8, Paul said, "But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ." How important it is to "count" the value of everything in this world and compare it with the value of knowing Jesus Christ! Can you count?
Have a great day!
